A moment of appreciation for Alan Rankine of The Associates

People of a certain age love The Associates, the band featuring the still astonishing voice of Billy McKenzie and his musical partner Alan Rankine. There’s been an astonishing amount written about the band over the years but there’s a little known solo album that Alan Rankine released in 1987 that is simply one of the lost classics of British music She Loves me Not

The album has a number of stand out tracks but it’s the title track that’s one of the highlights.

It is however a song called The Sandman that’s a real lost classic.

To this day I have no idea how this song is mostly forgotten by people who even love The Associates as it’s a work of genius. So here it is for people to discover all over again or for the first time.

Enjoy!

  1. Thanks for posting this track. I was a huge fan of The Associates back in the very early 1980s, but wasn’t even aware that Alan had released a solo album !
It is fair to say Billy’s music after Alan left didn’t have the same impact. “Sulk” is the best UK avant garde pop album, period. Even after thirty four years, it still sounds astounding.
