It’s been a crap week. Work is crap. My Big Plan is stalled for a couple of months. The Tories won the election and are setting about fucking every single one of up like a kipper. On the other hand one of my favourite comics from last year, The Auteur, has returned in a new mini-series!
The blurb for the series from publisher Oni Press goes like this…..
Your favorite slapstick comedy gorefest is back! Down on his luck and out on his ass after being thrown out of Hollywood, Nathan T. Rex refuses to accept defeat! Prepping his next exploitation masterpiece, Sister Bambi, Rex and crew head to South America with Nazis, ninjas, and budgetary constraints nipping at their heels in search of the most elusive piece of any artistic endeavor: foreign financing! Fall in love all over again with the return of the most insane series of 2014, but in 2015, make sure you wear protection.
Nathan T. Rex is a monster. A gloriously insane monster that writer Rick Spears uses to heavily satirise American culture and society, especially the art of making Hollywood films.I mentioned previously there’s a streak of satirist Chris Morris running through this and from the off Spears makes sure that anyone of a nervous disposition is going to be shaking.
This issue opens with Rex pitching to get the money together to shoot a new film after the disaster that was President’s Day,which we find out got him kicked out of Los Angeles into the desert.
This simply put is exactly the sort of cynical, bitter and hilarious thing I needed after a shite week that showed there’s very little that goes right when you really want it to, but to keep on going because the bastards can’t grind you down, even a monster like Rex can’t be ground down.
There is no chance that people aren’t going to be offended or upset by what is one giant ‘trigger warning’ and this is what makes The Auteur so brilliant in that it doesn’t give a fuck, but it’s targeted offensiveness in a way that works for the story rather than just going for the shock value per say.
Though this panel could stop a few hearts but the pages after that are just fantastically and brilliantly hilariously offensive but you’ll have to find out that for yourselves should you choose to buy the issue….
The Auteur: Sister Bambi promises to be yet another mental ride and I’m fully on board for it…
