Watch Jello Biafra and Tipper Gore discuss censorship on Oprah in 1986

As the UK faces what looks like a repressive Tory government and the Americans come to terms with Obama being their Tony Blair, it’s time to take a lesson from history. Back in 1986 there were attempts to label records with ‘parental advisory’ labels, something that sadly was successful, but the arguments made against what was an attempt to censor music were well fought and argued, and none as much as this exceptional episode of Oprah featuring former Dead Kennedy’s frontman Jello Biafra face off against Tipper Gore, Al Gore’s wife.

It’s an amazing bit of television, especially seeing at it’s American 80’s TV which from this side of the Atlantic was horrible conservative and bland. It needs to be watched as the same arguments Gore and her cronies drag out are the same ones David Cameron and his cronies already are dragging out, so by learning from past battles we should learn how to fight future ones.

Here’s all the parts from Youtube. Enjoy…..
