Tomorrow I’m off after a rubbish week to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens before somebody ruins it for me or before the inevitable parody hits the internet, but a long time ago, in a place far, far away these sort of concerns weren’t a huge issue as things moved much slower in those glorious days of 1977 and 1978 when arguably Star Wars was at it’s complete peak.
Of course popular culture likes taking the piss out of itself so Star Wars parodies sprung up in plenty of places but most were desperate until 1978’s Hardware Wars. Directed, produced and written by Ernie Fosselius, Hardware Wars is a delight that I first saw as a lad at a science fiction convention in Glasgow in the early 1980’s and ever since I’ve adored. It’s not just funny, it’s also something that clearly loves the source material but isn’t afraid to rip the piss out of it.
For years I’d see it at SF or comic conventions and be transported back to that time when seeing someone with two Danish pastries stuck on either side of their head was funny. In Hardware Wars, it still is.
So as we all see The Force Awakens, here’s a wee bit of Star Wars comedy from the very beginning. Enjoy….
