Ladybaby is Japan’s latest attempt to troll the planet

Remember how everyone go in a buzz last year about Japanese J-Pop/Metal band Babymetal? Japan isn’t a country that rests on it’s laurels and sits back let us in the West get complacent about it. Nope, here’s Ladybaby. Another metal/J-Pop fusion but their stunt is two young girls in typical anime/hentai clothes and a large bloke with a beard (apparently called Ladybeard) also in typical anime.hentai clothes, in this case singing a song about the glorious consumerism you can indulge in when visiting Japan.

There is now nothing Japan can do that will shock or surprise me outside of Godzilla porn….

Read Heavy Metal, Starlog, Warren Magazines and old Marvel magazines for free

I discovered a nice wee magazine archive site the other day. On it, it’s possible to read not only the entire run of SF magazine Starlog for free; Marvel Comics’ Mad ripoff, Crazy, (which I forgot used to reword old Marvel monster strips, not to mention it had Howard the Duck strips not written by Steve Gerber so are pretty rubbish) and even bizarrely enough, a run of Smash Hits.

For me though it’s the collection of old Warren Magazines and the run of Heavy Metal from the first issue that is going to keep me happy over the Christmas holidays.

There’s some amazing stuff buried in there and I’m going to wade through some of the crap the magazine has for the gems in there. I might even have a shufty at some of those old Smash Hits too…

Metallica shouldn’t play Glastonbury…

There’s a little fuss over Metallica playing the Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival because we have the Arctic Monkeys on one side saying they shouldn’t be playing , and on the other hand some of their fans are saying they shouldn’t be playing because it’s somehow betraying their fans. 

This is on both sides part, complete and utter fucking bollocks. Metallica should play and they should headline. In fact it’s seriously overdue for a metal band to headline the festival which has, at best, dabbled with metal and skirted round Punk on it’s main stages. It’s an arts festival and missing out the harder forms of music is ridiculous just because people say it’s ‘not what should be there’.

What’d people have? Fucking Coldplay again??

I’ve seen Metallica a few times including once at the Reading Festival. They’ve been immensely dull at times, but when they’re on form they’re an amazing live band who take songs like One and turn it into a wall of sound few other acts out there can do.

Now this isn’t as bad as the Jay Z outcry from 2008, and it certainly isn’t tinged with racism as that was, but it is tinged with a sort of classism that Glastonbury is somehow too ‘sophisticated’ for the gruff genre of heavy metal, and that only painfully white Indie guitar music is good enough.

Think about it. Who’d you rather actually see at a festival? Kasabian or Metallica? Both acts are fairly conservative but there’s more chance of the blood pumping into your groin listening to Metallica than Kasabian’s Indie by Numbers. There is also the fact Metallica have one of the best songs ever…

Now I’m by no means a Metallica fan. I think they’ve not produced anything decent since the 90’s and their treatment of fans downloading their songs from Napster still stinks, but Glastonbury is supposed to celebrate all music, not just what Hipsters reading the NME think is ‘great music’ and whose musical history of the festival reaches back to as far as 2005.

For me, this is the festival making up for all the lost opportunities of sticking harder bands on a main stage in a leading slot. OK, they did stick Queens of the Stone Age on headlining the Other Stage the other year, but that was against Beyonce, so it was lovely and quiet but they deserved a bigger crowd. A bit of variety makes the festival, and frankly, I hope this is a sign that Michael Eavis decides to get more metal and punk bands on the main stages. It’d be brilliant to shake the festival up from an impending middle class stupor.

Those moaning that this is ‘letting down their fans’ need to also realise some people don’t just follow one type of music, and are in fact musical cuckoos who like genres of all types. I’m looking at my CD’s and there’s a few Trojan Records box sets, Boards of Canada, Prince, Sisters of Mercy, Bowie, Sly and the Family Stone, The Hives and lots, lots more. There’s nothing which suggest I listen to one type of music only unlike I assume those ‘fans being let down’ who have all the metal you can eat in their collections. Variety is a glorious thing and open the mind.

People going have a choice between Metallica and one of the roughly two dozen at least other acts playing on other stages, or they could just do nothing. That’s the beauty about Glastonbury. It can be what you want it to be if you let it. You don’t have to sit on your arse in front of the Pyramid Stage watching everything because you know it’ll be safe, mainly ordinary, acts.

Metallica shouldn’t play Glastonbury, they should fucking blow the place up with huge explosions of sound. If that upsets people then sod them….

I have discovered BABYMETAL and so should you.

Babymetal are a Japanese J-Pop/metal/dance band who should in all reality be utterly, utterly awful. In fact they’re the freshest, most brilliant thing I’ve seen in music this year so far. If you don’t like this song called Give Me Chocolate then you’re dead from the scalp down.

They’re coming to Europe in the summer. If they play Glastonbury I will be delighted…..

 

My top 20 Comic Book films-18-Heavy Metal

I did my top 20 horror and SF films last year, and found doing the lists to be more fun than expected, so in a massive bit of logic here’s my top 20 films adapted or inspired from comics. I need to point out I mean comics, not ‘superhero comics’ which is a lazy, and incorrect way to describe a wonderfully varied medium and it’d also cut out some bloody good films!

Number 18 is the ridiculous animated version of Heavy Metal.

I call this a ridiculous film because the idea of adapting stories from Heavy Metal magazine (the American version of the French SF comic magazine Métal Hurlant) is in itself bonkers because you have an anthology magazine so making a film meant making an anthology. Anthology films are, on the whole, a total mess (though there’s more anthology films coming up on this list) , though Heavy Metal works by basically not caring too much and trying to showcase what made the magazine work.

It does this by trying to get core creators like Richard Corben, Dan O’Bannon,  and Berni Wrightson to turn out the better stories in the film, with Wrightson’s Captain Sternn, and O’Bannon’s splendid WW2 zombie story, B-17 being real highlights. Though Corben’s Den is a decent attempt to translate his very violent, very sexual fantasy story on screen. The story, Harry Canyon, is also surprisingly good.

Otherwise it’s pretty average at best, with these and all the stories shot through with an American hippy stoner sense of comedy that’s dated awfully, not to mention the annoying heavy metal soundtrack that helps take you out the film several times. I’ve nothing basically against this sort of American heavy metal music but once your balls have dropped you realise it’s utter pish. However the market for this film was teenage boys which is why there’s so much animated female flesh on display. Even Corben’s Den which is normally a sea of tits and cocks in it’s original form has been reduced to a more sanitised version.

Most of the time it’s more like an animated Underground comic from the 1970’s and that’s part of the fun of it. Yes, it is sexist. Yes, it’s dated awfully in places. Yes, the crap heavy metal music is annoying but it somehow works, but if you do watch it don’t fast forward through B-17. It’s an excellent story that I find amazing that no producer has picked up for a remake today.

Anyhow, search it out. It’s worth a look.

Fantastic Planet-Or Why French SF Is Far, Far Better Than You Think.

It’s a Sunday night and I’m juggling three or four different blogs at the same time, while digesting Sunday dinner and taking advantage of the fact I don’t have to go to bed on a ridiculously early hour on a Sunday as Monday is only a half day in this new job.

The point is The Fifth Element is on Five and I quite like the film even though there’s many who can’t get past Chris Tucker’s annoying character, or the sheer weirdness of it all, not to mention that it just seems different to every other SF adventure film you’ve ever seen. Well, blame the French. Everything in it is French, even Bruce Willis has been transformed as much as is possible for Bruce Willis into a French action hero and any film featuring Knowle‘s finest Tricky in an exceptionally odd bit of casting deserves love, so love the film. It’s a huge piece of fun, plus it’s got designs by the great comic artist Moebius so that’s a huge plus in any book.

What it did bring up is memories of the animated French film Fantastic Planet, or La Planète Sauvage to give it the original title.

It’s a film that’s never been shown on British TV as far as I know, and since the age of 12 or 13 I’ve constantly looked out for it so I could see if what I saw was actually real but in the 21st century you don’t need to worry about schedules when Youtube is around.

The film itself is set on an alien world where humans are bred as pets by giant alien creatures in a bizarre and wonderful alien world, and you can read a typically detailed and spoiler filled review of the film on it’s Wikipedia page here. The plot is weird and bizarre, but it’s a set up for the fantastic visuals you see on screen.

It’s just one of these films where the filmmakers imaginations are allowed free range, and it’s got an amazing score which was cited by the likes of Boards of Canada as an influence.

The first time I saw the film was in fact the last 20 minutes at Albacon 80, the Easter Science Fiction convention held in Glasgow  where I’d been taken by my mother for a day as my first example entrance into the world of fandom, and it was a strange an bizarre world but that’s another story for another time.

Needless to say to my 13 year old self this was a revelation. I didn’t realise film could be this weird, unusual and just bloody brilliant as it was an experience for the senses even if I was watching it in a big room full of sweaty SF fans. It didn’t manage to lose the weird beauty of the images.

It took me only a few years til I saw the film in full at another SF convention in Glasgow in 1983, I think that was the last time I saw it til a few years ago I stumbled across it on Youtube and it’s worth searching out but watch the trailer to get a jist of it. It’s worth it.

Another time I’ll talk about all those conventions and the other films I saw like Wizards which made an impact on me.
